MasterChef Aus S12EPS 34, 35, 36, 37, 38 & 39 – Recap

Episode 36 – Monday 1st June – Usually Team Challenge

This week, only one person will go home. They’ll be doing heats to get the people for Immunity on Thursday.

Contestants at the top, with heat one cooking today.

Today is heat one, with Brendon, Reynold and Callum cooking against each other. In round one, they choose a citrus and make a dish, either sweet or savoury. The top two from round one will go to round two. In round two, they have to do the opposite to what they did in round one (eg sweet round one, savoury round two) using the same citrus as the first round. The winner will be in immunity on Thursday.

(Heat two will be tomorrow with Laura, Reece, Tessa and Khanh. Heat three will be Sarah, Emelia, Poh and Simon.)

They have 60 minutes, an open pantry and full access to the garden.

Time starts.

It’s tasting time.

First is Brendon with Boxing Chicken with Sticky Orange Sauce, with orange as his citrus.
The judges absolutely love it, and think the flavours are great, and it meets the brief.

Next is Reynold hero-ing lime with his Lime Curd, Feijoa and Lime Ganache.
They enjoy the zestiness and the flavours.

Finally, Callum, with a Mandarin and Chocolate Bavarois with Mandarin Puree and Earl Grey Ice Cream. He tells the judges to give the mandarin sphere a crack (image four).
The judges like it and enjoy the flavours.

Who’s into round two of heat one? Reynold and Callum.

They start cooking, same rules for last round. This time, both of them will be cooking a savoury dish.

When time ends, it means tasting time.

First. is Reynold doing a Citrus-Cured Kingfish with Avocado Puree, Ponzu Lime Gel and Dashi Cream with his lime.
Jock loves it, and says the lime works really well. Andy says the balance is a bit out.

Last is Callum with his mandarin dish and used 12 mandarins. He did a Mandarin Glazed Duck Breast with Chilli Mandarin Oil Noodles and Mandarin Master Stock.
Andy says he knocked it out of the park. Jock says every mouthful was amazing. Mel says there is a lot to be said for the ability to cram all that flavour and calls it a hug in a bowl.

They decide they don’t even need to talk, Callum has won, meaning he’ll be in this week’s immunity challenge on Thursday.
